to read film, part 1 -- staging, camera
 
(A) View Singin’ in the Rain, and any other one movie of student’s choice from list 1. As you view Singin’ in the Rain pay attention to the film’s view of film. Take notes on its view of the differences in function between film and vaudeville, film and Broadway, and talkies and silent pictures. As you view the movie you choose from list 1 think about what makes it a great film (according to film critics and institutions like afi.com). Complete reading report 1 on class page which will include a place to put your notes on the items mentioned above.
 
(B) Write a paper including all of the following (no more than four pages total).  (1) Read Belton, American Cinema/American Culture, 4th ed., 44-52 [3d ed., 44-52]. Based on the reading define the function in film of the following: staging (mise-en-scѐne); low-angle, eye-level, high angle shots; close-up, extreme close-up, medium close-up, medium shot, medium long shot, long shot, extreme long shot; zoom, pan; tracking shot, crane shot; subjective point of view, objective point of view (one page). (2) View the title song of Singin’ in the Rain (see below) and explain in terms of staging and camera (one page). (3) Read Belton 4th ed., chap 7 (musical) [3d ed., chap 7]. Based on the reading define the function in film of the following: narrative reality, musical reality, shifts in register, backstage musical, integrated musical (one page). (4) View again the title song of Singin’ in the Rain and explain in terms of the aspects the musical discussed in textbook reading (one page). (5) Turn in paper on class page.
