class materials
activity twelve

trapped in modern society and “bending reality”

(A) This is the individual student’s part of this week’s assignment. (1) Read Belton, American Cinema/American Culture, 4th ed., chaps 10, 12 (film noir, science fiction) [3d ed., chap 10, 12]. (2) View any film from list C or list D or list E. Select a scene and write a paragraph on its cultural significance. (To receive full credit your paragraph(s) on the scene needs to interact with at least one aspect of the ‘to read film’ unit, namely, camera, staging, light, sound, editing, story, ending, connotation, genre, or intertextuality.) (3) Complete reading report 12 on class page which will include places to put the paragraph(s) on the items mentioned above.

(B) This is the group’s part of this week’s assignment. (1) Select, view, and produce a researched interpretation of any film from list 4 -- your group needs to sign up. The interpretation needs to deal with the film’s “reality” in cultural and theological perspective. The paper needs to interact with Belton chaps 10 and 12, and several aspects of the ‘to read film’ unit, namely, camera, staging, light, sound, editing, story, ending, connotation, genre, or intertextuality. Five pages, with at least five print media resources besides textbooks to receive full credit (using additional resources, including internet resources, is fine). For a start see bibliography -- many of these items are available in the library, and others can be secured through InterLibrary Loan.  (2) One member of your group will upload the group’s paper on the class page. Also, upload the Pp slides for the presnetation. (3) Select a scene (four minutes or less). Present in class an interpretation of the scene with special attention to the interpretive elements we have learned in class. One minute summary of the film, up to four minute clip, ten minute presentation (fifteen minutes total). Participation by every member of the group is expected.
